Synergy TipsA brisk walk can take you a long way

This month’s tip is directed toward women who are not incorporating any aerobic activity into their daily lives, yet wanting better health and weight loss. The tip is being sent to you at a time when you can’t use winter weather as an excuse (amen!!!).

The tip is simple – walk. The single most effective activity a woman can do is brisk walking — about 30 minutes a day.

According to a recent study of people ages 60 – 79, those assigned to walk briskly for 45 minutes a day, three days a week, experienced an increase in the brain’s volume, especially in regions involved in memory, planning, multitasking and weight loss.

This simple, do anywhere anytime exercise also provides health benefits to women already suffering from chronic pain, depression, menopause, arthritis, diabetes, heart or lung disease.

Although formulas, fortified foods and supplements play a role in protecting your heart, preventing cancer, improving memory, strengthening bones and joints, and increasing your energy – if you are using them exclusively, without exercise, you may be finding that it’s hard to achieve the optimal health and weight loss you envision.

We recommend that your leading action to improved health be some form of aerobic activity at least three times a week. We have found that when our patients adopt some form of aerobic activity, from tennis to brisk walking to regular walking, their health improves tenfold.

If you live in Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Williamsburg, Hampton Roads, Eastern Shore, Richmond, Virginia, or North Carolina, and are not walking at least three times a week, we urge you to challenge yourself to do it. Like eating, sleeping and brushing your teeth, you don’t decide every day to do these things, you just do them. You should approach mild exercise the same way.

Treat your body the same way you would any other piece o f sophisticated equipment. You would not drive your car for a week at a time and expect it to perform optimally. Get up and move! We promise you will not regret it. Make a date with the pavement and keep it. You will be repaid many times over!
